Here, we will guide you in improving your calculation skills through the use of Vedic Maths methodologies. But before that, let us know the exact definition of Vedic Maths.

What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Maths is the ancient method of solving mathematical problems by using sutras to arrive at the accurate answer faster. Application of these methods simplifies the process of problem-solving and reduces the complex arithmetic operations into simpler ones.

Some Easy Vedic Maths Tricks

Following are some effective Vedic Maths tricks, which will help you in performing calculations faster:

  1. The magic number 5
  • Square of a number ending with 5: It is very easy to find the square of a number ending with 5. Say, the number is X5, so for obtaining the square of this number, you will have to multiply X with 1 more than itself, i.e. with (X+1) and then put 25 at the end of the result. Let us understand this with an example:

Let us try to find the square of 45.

The result will be 4* (4+1), i.e., 4*5 = 20 and then you need to add 25 at the end.

Hence, the square of 45 will be 2025.

  • Multiplication of a number by 5: There are two cases in this case:

If the number is even, you will have to divide the number by 2 and then put 0.

For example, let us multiply 340 by 5.

340/2= 170 and now you have to add 0 to the answer.

So, 340*5= 1700

Now, if the number is odd, you will have to follow a different procedure. First, you have to subtract 1 from the number and then divide the number by 2. Now, instead of adding 0 at the end like in the case of even number, you will have to add 5 at the end.

Let us understand this by taking an example: 361*5,

(361-1) is 360 and now 360/2 is 180. Now add 5 at the end, so the answer becomes 1805.

  1. Division of a number by 5: Such a type of division can be performed in the following steps:

Step 1: Multiply the number by 2.

Step 2: Now, you have to move the decimal point to the left by one place.

Step 3: The number to the left of the decimal point is your answer.

Let us understand this by taking an example.

For finding the division of 34570 by 5, we need to perform the following steps:

Step 1: 34570*2= 69140

Step 2: After moving the decimal one place to the left, the answer is 6914.0.

Step 3: The number on the left of the decimal, i.e. 6914 is the final answer.

  1. Multiplication of a 2-digit number from 11 to 19: Follow the following steps for performing this process:

Step 1: Add the unit digit of the smaller number to the larger number.

Step 2: Multiply the result obtained in step 1 by 10.

Step 3: Multiply the unit digit of both the numbers.

Step 4: Add the results obtained in step 2 and 3, and you will get the final answer.

Let us understand this with an example: 15*16.

Step 1: We have to add 5 and 16, and the obtained result is 21.

Step 2: The result obtained in step 1 has to be multiplied by 10. So, the result is 210.

Step 3: Now, the unit digit of both the numbers, i.e. 5 and 6 need to be multiplied, so the result obtained is 30.

Step 4: The results of step 2 and 3, i.e. 210 and 30 have to be added to arrive at the final answer.

So, the final result of 15*16 is 240.

  1. Conversion of kilogram into pound: There arrive many situations when we are required to convert kilograms into pounds. In this situation, a quick fix in the form of a simple Vedic maths rule will come to your rescue. The process involves 3 steps.

Step 1: Multiply the value of the kg quantity by 2.

Step 2: Divide the result obtained in step 1 by 10.

Step 3: Now, add the results obtained in step 1 and 2, and you will get the answer.

Let us elucidate this process with an example:

Say, you have to convert 150 kg into pounds.

Step 1: 150*2 = 300

Step 2: 300/10 = 30

Step 3: 300+30 = 330

So, 150 kg = 330 pounds

  1. Multiplication of two 3-digit numbers having the same digit in the hundred’s place:

Let there be two numbers in the form of abc and def. The multiplication of these two numbers involves the following steps:

Step 1: Multiply the unit’s digits of both the numbers.

Step 2: You have to add the unit digit of any one number to the other number.

Step 3: Subtract both the numbers at the unit’s place.

Step 4: Multiply the result of step 2 and step 3.

Step 5: Add the result of step 1 and step 4. This is the desired result.

Let us now understand this with an example.

Say, there are two numbers 505 and 507.

Step 1: We have to multiply  5 and 7, which is 35.

Step 2: Let us add the unit digit of 505, i.e. 5 to 507. So, the result of this step is 512.

Step 3: Now, 505-5 = 500 and 507-7 = 500.

Step 4: We need to multiply the result of step 2 and step 3, i.e. 512*500, which is 256000.

Step 5: In the last step, we are required to add the result of step 1 and step 4. So, the final result is 256035.
